[08:43:19] <vboxler> Hello, can i use aur pakage with archlinux32?
[08:43:28] <deep42thought> sure
[08:43:50] <deep42thought> like you can do with aur and arm, too
[08:45:23] <vboxler> and the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org can i use for archlinux32 to?
[08:45:24] <phrik> Title: ArchWiki (at wiki.archlinux.org)
[08:46:32] <vboxler> Or, where can i find the wiki for archlinux32?
[08:46:33] <deep42thought> partly: Once i686 support is dropped, infos specific to i686 should appear on separate sites or should at least be obviously declared as such. However, most of the stuff is architecture independent anyway
[08:46:42] <deep42thought> we have a forum at bbs.archlinux32.org
[08:46:44] <deep42thought> but no wiki
[08:47:03] <deep42thought> we thought, the additional infos would be minimal, not rectifying the effort
[08:49:01] <vboxler> deep42thought: ISO Size (dual bootable): 984.0 MB
[08:49:10] <deep42thought> yeah, it's huge
[08:49:18] <vboxler> is that iso for 64bit and 32bit?
[08:49:21] <deep42thought> yes
[08:49:50] <vboxler> deep42thought: thank you for your support, cu
[08:49:51] <deep42thought> it's aimed at people who put it on a usb thumb drive for emergencies or alike
[08:49:54] <deep42thought> cu

[11:00:28] -!- DanielTheKitsune has joined #archlinux-ports
[11:00:50] <DanielTheKitsune> Good night guys
[11:01:23] <DanielTheKitsune> How do I reinstall the video driver/packages in ArchLinux 32?
[11:02:03] <DanielTheKitsune> I dunno if some is corrupted, but an exception keeps happening with the kms_drm_helper
[11:02:09] <DanielTheKitsune> each boot
[11:26:32] <deep42thought> do you mean video drivers for x?
[11:30:45] <DanielTheKitsune> nope
[11:31:03] <DanielTheKitsune> the ones for the kernel and tge framebuffer virtual console
[11:31:07] <DanielTheKitsune> *the
[11:31:10] <DanielTheKitsune> :)
[11:32:10] <deep42thought> there is a kernel update in the pipeline, maybe this fixes everything :-D
[11:32:34] <DanielTheKitsune> I just made pacman -Syu
[11:32:42] <DanielTheKitsune> if something fixed
[11:32:50] <DanielTheKitsune> btw I am using the lts kernel
[11:33:01] <deep42thought> I don't know if drivers are (all?) included in the linux package
[11:33:14] <deep42thought> hmm, linux-lts is as-is
[11:33:47] <DanielTheKitsune> yet I'm finding problems here
[11:34:03] <DanielTheKitsune> I want to set vconsole.conf to load a specific font
[11:34:09] <DanielTheKitsune> cp850-8x8
[11:34:23] <DanielTheKitsune> FONT=cp850-8x8
[11:34:30] <DanielTheKitsune> is this correct?
[11:34:50] <deep42thought> seems right to me
[11:34:57] <DanielTheKitsune> and yes, I want that tiny font size
[11:35:09] <DanielTheKitsune> since I have a netbook with tiny screen
[11:39:21] <DanielTheKitsune> now, I don't know why
[11:40:00] <DanielTheKitsune> but the virtual console font is not set
[11:40:43] <DanielTheKitsune> if I add the hook consolefont to mkinitcpio.conf and I make again the initramfs, it works fkr a while
[11:41:04] <DanielTheKitsune> but once video makes that sucky exception, the font is reset
[11:42:36] <DanielTheKitsune> and if I issue systemctl status systemd-vconsole-setup it returns it's inactive (dead)
[11:42:45] <DanielTheKitsune> but it's loaded!
[11:42:55] <DanielTheKitsune> what is happening?
[11:43:19] <DanielTheKitsune> I started it manually and it works!
[11:43:42] <DanielTheKitsune> but I cannot enable it
[11:43:42] <deep42thought> it's not started on my system, either - maybe you need to enable it manually?
[11:43:46] <deep42thought> :-/
[11:45:00] <DanielTheKitsune> it complains about not being meant to be started from systemctl
[11:45:09] <deep42thought> according to the manpage it should be invoked by systemd-udevd
[11:45:25] <DanielTheKitsune> hmm...
[11:45:36] <DanielTheKitsune> I should read that service
[11:45:41] <DanielTheKitsune> maybe editing it?
[11:45:51] <deep42thought> so, I guess your font will "die" again when the video driver has his next hick up
[11:46:24] <deep42thought> it's only meant to run to _set_up_ the font - not to keep running afterwards, I guess
[11:46:55] <DanielTheKitsune> i guess too
[11:47:15] <DanielTheKitsune> then I still need to either delay the load of that service vconsole
[11:47:25] -!- abaumann has joined #archlinux-ports
[11:47:42] <DanielTheKitsune> or I need to sacrify a kitten
[11:48:11] <deep42thought> fixing the video driver's problem would be the way to go ;-)
[11:49:18] <DanielTheKitsune> hmm...
[11:49:26] <DanielTheKitsune> disabling kms works
[11:49:40] <DanielTheKitsune> but then I get this sucky low resolution
[11:50:09] <DanielTheKitsune> and probably unable to use fbdev2 for playing video
[11:50:54] <DanielTheKitsune> early load of kms works too
[11:51:25] <DanielTheKitsune> hrm...
[11:52:09] <DanielTheKitsune> but if I do early kms, this portable Arch 32 USB will fail on non-Intel GPU
[11:53:27] <DanielTheKitsune> although most times I use laptops from other classmates and the (slow and obsolete) PCs from computer lab with this USB, I still want it to be usable anywhere
[11:53:38] <DanielTheKitsune> yet I want this specific font
[11:56:08] <DanielTheKitsune> deep42thought, if I load both i915 (and yes, I know this goes along with intel_agp) and nouveau (Nvidia) on initramfs, will either crash?
[11:56:49] <DanielTheKitsune> or the wrong driver will simply leave space for the good driver?
[11:57:01] <deep42thought> dunno
[11:57:11] <deep42thought> but I think it'd have funny results
[11:57:15] <DanielTheKitsune> I tried loading both nouveau and i915
[11:57:42] <DanielTheKitsune> and only Intel worked, while the other was just ignored or not even parsed
[11:57:46] <DanielTheKitsune> who knows
[11:57:50] <DanielTheKitsune> but this worked
[11:57:52] <deep42thought> change the order
[11:58:09] <DanielTheKitsune> first nouveau then i915?
[11:58:20] <deep42thought> yes
[11:58:24] <DanielTheKitsune> oh well
[11:58:35] <DanielTheKitsune> if it fails, how do I start Arch?
[11:58:56] <deep42thought> you can override the kernel parameters in grub manually
[11:59:06] <DanielTheKitsune> oh well, I just add nomodeset
[11:59:11] <DanielTheKitsune> or how it was?
[12:00:01] -!- yokel has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[12:02:38] -!- yokel has joined #archlinux-ports
[12:04:57] <DanielTheKitsune> hmm...
[12:05:17] <DanielTheKitsune> it worked
[12:05:26] <DanielTheKitsune> so maybe I don't even have nouveau
[12:05:41] <DanielTheKitsune> I forgot to install xf86-video-nouveau
[12:05:49] <deep42thought> :-D
[12:06:16] <DanielTheKitsune> I will install it :D
[12:06:46] <DanielTheKitsune> and the font is set correctly with both early kms and hook
[12:10:44] <DanielTheKitsune> oh well, I rebooted and everything is well
[12:11:06] <DanielTheKitsune> discrete GPU are very rare or unexistent in this part of the country
[12:11:16] <DanielTheKitsune> but I will support them anyway
[12:17:46] -!- DanielTheFox has joined #archlinux-ports

[12:36:32] -!- tyzoid has joined #archlinux-ports
[12:37:15] <tyzoid> Hey deep42thought, the server running my mirror, forums, and news feed went down for 3hrs 52 minutes this morning
[12:37:41] <tyzoid> it's back up, but I'll be looking into what the cause is later this evening

[15:29:27] -!- DanielTheFox has joined #archlinux-ports
[15:29:35] <DanielTheFox> Good day.
[15:31:23] <DanielTheFox> o.o
[15:31:38] <DanielTheFox> who has free time to chat about archlinux?
[15:31:52] <deep42thought> I'm still here ;-)
[15:32:02] <deep42thought> however, "free" is relative
[15:32:07] <DanielTheFox> spare time?
[15:32:11] <deep42thought> :-D
[15:32:20] * DanielTheFox is noseless :D
[15:32:24] <DanielTheFox> meh
[15:32:43] <DanielTheFox> deep42thought: Why do you use ArchLinux?
[15:32:56] <deep42thought> hmm, good question
[15:33:10] <deep42thought> it was one of the least pains, I guess
[15:33:13] <DanielTheFox> I think you know, otherwise you wouldn't be using this specific OS
[15:34:11] <deep42thought> i tried to get slackware and debian running, installed crux on my desktop pc and was looking for different distros and finally came to arch on some other boxes
[15:34:23] <deep42thought> rolling release is a big plus
[15:34:45] <DanielTheFox> My first distro was Puppy Linux, I don't remember what version. It was based on Slackware and it was a version 6.x.x
[15:34:49] <deep42thought> and the don't-patch-every-upstream-bug philosophy
[15:35:01] <DanielTheFox> I discovered IRC there
[15:35:11] <DanielTheFox> but then I discovered Ubuntu
[15:35:35] <DanielTheFox> it had many nice features, but at a great expense: it uses a lot of computer resources
[15:35:59] <deep42thought> yeah, I also don't like distributions who make decisions for the user
[15:36:21] <DanielTheFox> after using it a while, I ended up uninstalling it, installed Windows XP for general usage and kept using Windows and MS-DOS only
[15:36:30] <deep42thought> like debian: "you installed sshd? I started it for you immediately, because you sure want so."
[15:36:50] <DanielTheFox> then I decided to taste Linux again... but armed with a little bit more knowledge
[15:36:54] <deep42thought> ah, right, at first I used win95, I think (might have been 98, though)
[15:37:13] <DanielTheFox> and I actually use in the same proportion both Windows and Linux
[15:37:32] <DanielTheFox> because all the bucketheads out there use stuff that only works on Windows
[15:37:41] <DanielTheFox> and yes, we have Wine here
[15:37:44] <deep42thought> I finally killed windows a few years ago, when they started to threaten me to upgrade from 7 to 10
[15:37:51] <DanielTheFox> but I don't use GUI so it's worthless.
[15:38:12] <DanielTheFox> I actually don't have newer version of Windows than XP
[15:38:18] <DanielTheFox> and they access internet
[15:38:29] <deep42thought> meh
[15:38:40] <DanielTheFox> somehow, I have been running lucky and the virus/hackers haven't tried to look at me
[15:38:53] <deep42thought> or you just didn't notice ;-)
[15:38:58] <DanielTheFox> or that brag about old versions being plainly insecure was a lie
[15:39:15] <deep42thought> nope, have a look at smb vulnerabilities
[15:39:27] <DanielTheFox> oh well, then I'm running with a lot of luck.
[15:40:23] <DanielTheFox> but anyway, my favorite thing about ArchLinux (and most distros that don't rely in GUI too) is the fact all the CPU power goes to what you really want to do.
[15:40:47] <DanielTheFox> No background hungry GUI grabbing some CPU time :)
[15:41:14] <DanielTheFox> but ArchLinux was the one I found first, sooooo... :P
[15:41:55] <DanielTheFox> also, this stuff runs very light and no RAM usage.
[15:42:09] <DanielTheFox> Did I told you my RAM usage never gets over 80 MB?
[15:42:51] <DanielTheFox> I don't have any GUI at all.
[15:45:34] <deep42thought> speaking of RAM: I should stop some builds, my box is currently swapping 1GB and slow as hell ...
[15:45:44] <DanielTheFox> xD
[15:45:55] <DanielTheFox> I don't have swap at all
[15:46:15] <deep42thought> I'm not certain if it really helps
[15:46:49] <DanielTheFox> if you have a LOOOOOT of spare RAM, it doesn't help
[15:47:11] <DanielTheFox> if you're constantly reaching the limits or being too close to them, then it helps
[15:47:24] <DanielTheFox> which happens a lot in Ubuntu
[15:47:48] <deep42thought> I think it depends on if you prefer possibly crashing programs or a possibly slow machine
[15:48:13] <deep42thought> apparently I chose the slow-machine option ...
[15:48:43] <DanielTheFox> slow is better than not-working
[15:48:49] <DanielTheFox> so your choice is wise
[16:01:42] -!- eschwartz has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
[16:05:55] -!- guys has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[16:07:00] <DanielTheFox> deep42thought: what GUI do you use?
[16:07:10] <deep42thought> openbox
[16:07:14] <deep42thought> no
[16:07:16] <deep42thought> fluxbox
[16:07:18] <deep42thought> sry
[16:07:22] <deep42thought> can't remember the name
[16:08:26] <DanielTheFox> oh well
[16:08:29] <DanielTheFox> a light one
[16:08:34] <deep42thought> :-)
[16:08:45] <deep42thought> I, too, like light software ;-)
[16:09:05] <DanielTheFox> hence why do I have only up to Windows XP
[16:09:15] <DanielTheFox> yet I have 98, 3.11 and MS-DOS
[16:09:25] <DanielTheFox> so ArchLinux complements too
[16:10:58] <deep42thought> lol: "rfc W: Package was 100% docs by size; maybe you should split out a docs package"
[16:10:59] -!- guys has joined #archlinux-ports
[16:15:30] <jelle> the package is 100% docs :p
[16:15:56] <DanielTheFox> deep42thought: sadly, Linux isn't perfect either
[16:16:02] <DanielTheFox> but it's close to
[16:16:07] <deep42thought> nothing is perfect
[16:16:31] <deep42thought> anyway, I'll have to leave now
[16:16:46] <deep42thought> cu later
[16:16:51] -!- deep42thought has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
