Back
[01:12:39] <yang3> Bouib46 (not an arch expert here), but with a manual to follow, everything is possible, if someone did it before you
[01:13:05] <yang3> I had it installed on an OLPC XO-1 refcently
[01:13:28] <yang3> which mac do you have?
[01:14:13] <yang3> Bouib46 first you need to figure out if mac uses a i486 architecture
[01:14:42] <yang3> on other linuxes I think it's a separate architecture, like 'ppc' or motorola mk68?
[02:05:34] <Bouib46> hi yang3
[02:05:38] <Bouib46> i m back
[02:05:55] <Bouib46> well i havent seen it yet
[02:06:16] <Bouib46> i know it'ss 32bit
[02:07:02] <Bouib46> i ll come back with all détails,
[02:07:07] <Bouib46> see you

[13:36:20] <Bouib46> hi i will isntall arch 32 and few other distro on a mac pro 12 go ram version 1.1 32 bit but with an nvidia graphics card
[13:36:51] <Bouib46> NVDIA quadro FX5600 de 1536mo
[13:39:06] <KitsuWhooa> you sure it can't do 64 bit?
[13:41:51] <Bouib46> perhaps... butt as m y friend say, he tries 64bit but cant succeed... ( installing a debian flavor)
[13:42:14] <KitsuWhooa> it probably has to do with other issues

[13:42:33] <phrik> Title: Mac Pro - Wikipedia (at en.wikipedia.org)
[13:42:53] <Bouib46> KitsuWhooa: is arch32 as archlinux about updates ? i am on arch 64 and never any problem wigth update
[13:43:15] <KitsuWhooa> all but the 2006 model can do EFI64, and even the 2006 model has an amd64 CPU so if you use a 32 bit grub you should be able to load a 64 bit OS
[13:43:27] <KitsuWhooa> no, arch32 has a lot of issues
[13:43:41] <KitsuWhooa> many packages don't build or don't work
[13:43:54] <Bouib46> ah
[13:43:54] <KitsuWhooa> if you can install 64 bit arch, you should
[13:44:02] <Bouib46> ok
[13:44:10] <Bouib46> thank you for your honesty
[13:44:22] <Bouib46> i ll try
[13:44:26] <KitsuWhooa> based on the information, at least from that wikipedia page, the issue is not 32 vs 64 bits
[13:44:41] <KitsuWhooa> wouldn't surprise me if something broke because no one tests with these old machines anymore though
[13:45:43] <KitsuWhooa> assuming there was ever proper support for whatever proprietary things apple likely did
[13:45:49] <KitsuWhooa> I have no experience with any of them
[13:46:29] <KitsuWhooa> the 2012 model should not have an FX5600; was it downgraded?
[13:46:32] <Bouib46> thank for the advice ( grub or syslinux 32 bit and after 64 for the rest
[13:46:33] <Bouib46> )
[13:46:56] <KitsuWhooa> or do you have a 2008 one
[13:47:11] <KitsuWhooa> wikipedia still says it has a 64 bit EFI
[13:47:41] <KitsuWhooa> There's this for the 2006 model that has 32 bit efi https://ctrl-alt-rees.com

[13:48:17] <KitsuWhooa> The arch wiki mentions IA32 https://wiki.archlinux.org but I don't see any explicit information about it

[13:49:06] <KitsuWhooa> looks like you might need to use the i386-efi target with --removable according to the green tip box
[13:49:58] <KitsuWhooa> but again, that's only for 32 bit EFI which your mac pro likely doesn't have unless it's a 2006 model

[13:55:52] <Bouib46> well i will ask on the terminal facing the mac
[13:56:39] <Bouib46> thank you all for your "franc-ness" and help full advices
[14:32:45] <yang3> Boulb46,alternatively if you cannot get Linux to work on it, you could try NetBSD (or OpenBSD or Free sad) they are similar to Linux and also open source and they have an ongoing support for mac's.
[14:33:20] <Bouib46> ah ? ok why not to :)

[19:31:44] <abaumann> Just that you see what kind of trouble you get yourself in. :-)
[19:31:53] <abaumann> every model is different of course.
[19:32:21] <abaumann> ReFIT is a good dual boot option. Unless it is really old, go with 64-bit.
