[19:36:06] <laptop_> hello
[19:36:16] <laptop_> need help with archlinux32
[19:38:01] -!- Mart|n has joined #archlinux-ports
[19:41:08] <abaumann> hi. we have a new channel #archlinux32 for user questions. :-)
[19:41:10] <abaumann> hop there..
[19:41:21] <laptop_> i cant
[19:41:24] <abaumann> oh.
[19:41:25] <laptop_> it will not allow me to
[19:41:27] <abaumann> ok then.
[19:41:31] <abaumann> interesting..
[19:41:43] <abaumann> ok, ask away.
[19:42:30] <girls> laptop_: you need to be authenticated against nickserv to join #archlinux32
[19:42:35] <laptop_> well i want to go use 32 bit but i wondering since they abandoned
[19:42:37] <girls> ... it's the same as with #archlinux
[19:42:59] <laptop_> 32 bit support does that mean no security updates or at least not official one
[19:43:20] <laptop_> sorry already registered but lost my password and it will not reset it to my email
[19:43:42] <girls> well, we build upstream's (=x86_64) packages for i686
[19:44:35] <laptop_> i see but not the latest security updates, chromium broswer or firefox right?
[19:45:47] <abaumann> chromium-65.0.3325.181
[19:46:00] <laptop_> wow and it will autoupdate
[19:46:04] <abaumann> firefox-58.0.2
[19:46:20] <abaumann> aeh. via pacman. not via "help" "update"..
[19:46:58] <laptop_> i see so you guys take the 64 bit packages and make them 32 bit, what about security updates and new kernals, how long will you continue to do this
[19:47:22] <abaumann> as long as our hardware still runs. ;-)
[19:47:50] <abaumann> ..and of course at some point the original authors might decide to drop crutial packages.. already happened for opera for instance.
[19:48:28] <laptop_> okay but you will continue to do security updates for the kernal
[19:48:53] <laptop_> kernel sorry typing with wrist splints on
[19:49:21] <abaumann> we have the vanilla kernel, the LTS, and the ZEN one.
[19:49:28] <abaumann> from upstream.
[19:49:34] <abaumann> for the rest, you are on your own.
[19:50:25] <abaumann> for instance, no linux-hardened.
[19:50:42] <abaumann> no grsecurity
[19:51:42] <girls> laptop_: if you miss anything in archlinux32 which is available on archlinux, we're happy to accept pull requests / patches to get the x86_64 packages compiled on i686
[19:54:05] <laptop_> I see thank you.
[19:54:29] <laptop_> this must be difficult and time consuming to convert 64 to 32 bit
[19:56:41] <laptop_> I really appreciate the work you do
[19:56:50] <laptop_> also no other distribution autoupdates pauman
[19:56:52] <laptop_> really amazing
[19:56:57] <abaumann> sometimes you have to change arch to i686, sometimes you need to patch, sometimes you have to fix the code on your own.
[19:57:23] <abaumann> also the fact that Fedora and Debian didn't drop i686 yet helps. :-)
[19:58:03] <laptop_> wow, I am thinking about ubuntu but it does not have rolling release model nor does it autoupdate apps, on my 64 bit system I can open maybe 4 windows on chromium but on 32 bit I can open like 8 windows
[19:58:36] <abaumann> yeah. that's why 32-bit is not obsolete. :-)
[19:58:42] <abaumann> ask the RISC-V guys..
[19:59:10] <laptop_> cool, I hope they pay you to maintain the 32 archlinux archive
[19:59:32] <abaumann> aeh.. no. everything is volunteer work, as is archlinux 64 bit itself..
[19:59:51] <abaumann> .. some sponsoring for machines and services..
[20:00:13] <laptop_> I see...
[20:00:22] <laptop_> do you find archlinux to be more secure than ubuntu or debian
[20:01:19] <abaumann> hard to say. I'm the wrong one to judge..
[20:02:20] <laptop_> most of the packages for arch are derived from debian or ubuntu correct, since ubuntu is a commercial product in some instances
[20:02:43] <abaumann> no.
[20:02:53] <abaumann> archlinux packages from the original authors.
[20:03:01] <laptop_> wow
[20:03:02] <abaumann> but all distributions share their patches.
[20:03:05] <laptop_> greate
[20:03:07] <laptop_> great
[20:03:18] <abaumann> sometimes there is a debian patch in archlinux, sometimes vice-versa.
[20:04:02] <abaumann> archlinux tries to patch as little as possible.. hence trying to minimize the effort for the maintainers and packagers..
[20:04:46] <girls> abaumann: incidentally, I think, this also reduces our maintenance burden
[20:05:07] <abaumann> luckily, yes.
[20:05:28] <abaumann> we are already far too few people..
